First, I identified that the FTC now requires businesses to clearly disclose if reviews are incentivized.

This means if you're offering discounts, loyalty points, or free products in exchange for feedback, you MUST disclose it.

So, I updated all review solicitation emails with clear disclosure language:

"This review was written in exchange for a 10% discount on future services."

I also implemented systems to flag potentially inauthentic feedback before it goes live.

Finally, I made sure all reviews—positive AND negative—are displayed publicly (unless they violate platform guidelines).

But how do you optimize it for 2025?

One powerful tactic is to answer questions that your target audience asks online.

For this example, I used a local restaurant client.

Instead of just listing "Italian Restaurant," I wrote:

"Family-owned Italian restaurant serving authentic Neapolitan pizza made with San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Gluten-free and vegan options available. Open for dine-in, takeout, and delivery."

Then, I added structured data markup to help search engines understand the business information better.

And when Google's AI sees this detailed, structured content, they say: "Great. This business clearly explains what they offer and who they serve."

3. Create E-E-A-T Compliant Content

Launched as part of Google's ongoing algorithm updates, E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is exactly what it sounds like: a ranking system designed to reward businesses that demonstrate real expertise.

Basically…

Google prioritizes content written by actual experts, not generic marketing copy.

They're cracking down on AI-generated fluff and rewarding authentic, experience-based content.

Now, let's talk about what E-E-A-T means for local businesses:

Experience: Have you actually provided the services you're writing about?

Expertise: Do you have the credentials and knowledge to back up your claims?

Authoritativeness: Are you recognized as a go-to source in your local market?

Trustworthiness: Can customers rely on your information and services?

Incorporate E-E-A-T signals into your content to help boost your local rankings.

And web traffic.

For example, every piece of content should feature real staff members with their actual credentials.

And this is highlighted with detailed staff pages that feature bios, certifications, and each person's specific expertise.

4. Navigate Industry-Specific Compliance With "Regulation Mapping"

Industry-specific compliance is complex:

You need to follow FTC guidelines PLUS your industry's specific regulations.

For example, I worked with a healthcare client who needed to comply with both FTC advertising rules and HIPAA privacy requirements.

Here's what we discovered:

Healthcare businesses can't just follow general FTC guidelines—they need additional layers of compliance for patient privacy and medical advertising claims.

So, we created a "regulation map" that covered:

This is similar to technique #1 from this guide…

Instead of just checking FTC compliance, you audit ALL platform policies.

In other words:

Review your business presence on Google, Yelp, Facebook, and other platforms for policy violations.

For example:

I discovered that a client's Google Business Profile violated several guidelines they didn't even know existed.

So, I conducted a thorough audit of their:

  • Business name formatting
  • Category selection
  • Photo compliance
  • Review response practices
  • Q&A management

Which led to a significant boost in local visibility (including a 40% increase in direction requests):

8. Create Content That Appeals to Local Customers

Here's the truth:

If you want local customers to choose your business, you need to create content that speaks directly to their specific needs.

Example:

A few years ago, I created location-specific landing pages for a client in the HVAC industry.

Even though HVAC isn't the most "exciting" topic, our pages dominated local search. We're talking first-page rankings for dozens of local keywords.

Now, there are several reasons these pages did so well… from the keyword research to the technical optimization.

But a huge part of their success was due to one simple thing:

They appealed to people searching for HVAC services in specific neighborhoods.

I'll explain.

I noticed that people in this area were searching for very specific terms like "furnace repair downtown" and "AC installation near [local landmark]."

So, I decided to create pages that addressed these hyperlocal search queries.

And this led to rankings and traffic from dozens of local search terms…

…and hundreds of new customers.

9. Optimize for Voice Search Compliance

Voice search optimization found that conversational queries get higher engagement on local platforms.

What does this mean for you?

You need to optimize for natural language queries.

For example, here's how I optimized content for a local dentist:

Instead of targeting "dentist downtown," I optimized for "where can I find a good dentist near me?"

In about three months, this approach generated:

In my experience, local content largely succeeds or fails based on one factor:

What are compliance triggers?

They're elements you include in your content that demonstrate trustworthiness and regulatory compliance.

A lot of these principles were first discovered by consumer behavior researchers and compliance experts.

And they've proven through studies what I discovered through trial and error:

When you include compliance triggers in your content, customers are significantly more likely to trust and choose your business.

For example:

One of the most powerful compliance triggers is transparency.

Transparency means clearly disclosing important information about your business practices.

And this trigger was a large part of the reason a legal client's website performed so well.

Specifically, we included clear information about:

  • Attorney credentials and bar admissions
  • Fee structures and billing practices
  • Case outcome disclaimers
  • Privacy policies and data handling

Every time a potential client saw this transparent information, it boosted their confidence in the firm.

So they contacted the firm… again and again.

The firm even got featured in local legal directories thanks to their well-rounded compliance approach.

First, ensure your website loads quickly on mobile devices (under 3 seconds).

Next, make sure all compliance information is easily accessible on mobile:

  • Privacy policies
  • Terms of service
  • Business licenses
  • Contact information
  • Review policies

Finally, optimize your local business information for mobile users.

And you'll probably find that your mobile traffic converts better than desktop traffic.

13. Create Hyperlocal Content

A while back, we analyzed local search behavior across multiple industries.

Why?

We wanted to see which types of local content worked best.

And we found that hyperlocal content gets significantly more engagement than generic local content.

In fact, as you can see from our analysis, the more specific the local connection, the better the content performs.

I've noticed the same thing with my own clients.

For example, here's a hyperlocal blog post I created for a restaurant client:

"The Best Date Night Spots Within Walking Distance of [Local Theater]"

This post mentioned specific local landmarks, nearby parking options, and even the walking time between locations.

And the simple fact that the post was hyperlocal is a big reason why it generated over 2,000 local visits:

(And those visits converted into hundreds of new customers.)

14. Maintain Active Platform Engagement

If you want to drive more local traffic to your website, active platform engagement HAS to be on your radar.

Why?

Google Business Profile, Yelp, and Facebook are among the most important platforms for local businesses.

In fact, these platforms are some of my clients' top traffic sources (along with Google organic search and referral traffic).

That said:

Getting engagement on these platforms is HARD.

But it doesn't have to be.

That's why I'm going to share two strategies that will help you get more engagement on your business profiles.

15. Implement Review Compliance Protocols

Is there a formula for managing reviews that stay compliant?

Nope! Or else everyone would do it 🙂

That said, there ARE three things you can do to ensure your review management stays compliant with FTC guidelines.

1. Use Clear Disclosure Language

Any incentivized reviews must include clear disclosures about the relationship between your business and the reviewer.

The type of incentive doesn't matter all that much. The important thing is that you disclose it clearly.

Why?

The FTC requires transparency in all advertising relationships, including review incentives.

2. Ensure Reviews Have High "Authenticity"

This simply means your reviews come from real customers who actually used your services.

Maybe they bought your product last month.

Or they visited your restaurant last week.

Either way, research shows that authentic reviews have a much higher impact on local search rankings.

3. Give Reviews an Initial "Verification" Process

For example, one client implemented a review verification system that resulted in 95% authentic reviews and zero FTC compliance issues.

And it wouldn't have happened if they didn't verify that reviews came from actual customers… which led to better search rankings and more trust from potential customers.

16. Optimize Business Profiles on Multiple Platforms

Multi-platform optimization is a dead-simple way to improve your local search compliance.

All you need to do is maintain consistent, accurate information across all platforms…

…and they'll start to reinforce each other's credibility.

17. Monitor Competitor Compliance Practices

Competitor monitoring is an AWESOME way to stay ahead of compliance issues.

(As you know, staying compliant = avoiding penalties.)

All you need to do is:

Monitor what your competitors are doing for compliance.

Learn from their mistakes and successes.

Here's how to do it…

First, use tools to monitor competitor reviews, citations, and business profile updates.

Then, either create better compliance processes based on what you learn…

…or avoid the mistakes you see them making.

Simple.

18. Add Structured Data to Local Content

Here's a mistake a lot of local businesses make:

They create great content… without giving search engines ANY way to understand it properly.

Here's an example:

A local business posts about their services but doesn't include structured data markup.

I'm not judging. I used to do the same thing.

But I recently discovered something:

Adding structured data to your local content can dramatically improve your search visibility.

For example, when I publish content about local services, I now include schema markup for:

  • Business information
  • Service areas
  • Hours of operation
  • Contact details
  • Review ratings

As you can see, that structured data leads to better search results and more clicks.

Sweet!

19. Improve Your Local Click-Through-Rate

I have some good news:

If you want more traffic from local search, you DON'T need higher rankings.

(Seriously!)

Instead, you can focus on improving your local click-through rate (CTR).

For example, let's say you rank #3 in the local pack for your target keyword. And your CTR is 6%.

And let's say that you double that CTR to 12%.

Well, you just doubled your local traffic… without improving your rankings.

But wait, there's more…

When you get a higher CTR, you might also improve your local search rankings.

But how do you actually improve your local CTR?

Here are a few tips that work great:

  • Add compelling business descriptions
  • Use high-quality, eye-catching photos
  • Include relevant local keywords
  • Maintain high review ratings
  • Keep your business information complete and accurate

20. Maintain Consistent Brand Messaging

There's no way around it:

When it comes to local SEO compliance, consistent messaging works GREAT.

And there's evidence to back this up.

(Besides the fact that consistency builds trust with both search engines and customers.)

In our analysis of successful local businesses, we found that consistent brand messaging across all platforms led to better search rankings and more customer trust.

Businesses with consistent messaging get higher engagement rates than those with inconsistent branding.

And when I look at my own clients, I notice the same thing.

But it's also a strategic advantage.

You'll need to regularly audit your compliance status and make improvements—rather than just setting it up once and forgetting about it.

This builds long-term success and can lead to sustainable local search dominance.
